It helps to be completely mindful with the desire to tell a story through your selections. It takes real composing, knowing how to build the peaks and valleys to carry your listeners on a journey. And we've been on quite a journey in the past 6 months. As strongly worded in this interview, Platurn without conviction, declares music and entertainment at large to be an essential business. How else do we cope with the madness & hate spewing up? We discuss the plethora of DJs streaming, how to differentiate yourself, if this is what's left for performers and how he builds on his projects to evolve into the nest one.

A 26 year veteran of the music industry, Platurn has traveled the world many times over bringing quality music to multiple corners of the globe. With a client list that includes Red Bull, Toyota, Adidas, Pixar, Monster Cable, MTV, and the Golden State Warriors to name a few, he’s built a reputation as a music man with vision plus a deep sense of community, and in turn preserving crucial aspects of DJ and music culture. Founder of the Oakland Faders and The 45 Sessions, he has solidified himself as a force to be reckoned with in the ever changing entertainment industry landscape.

Career highlights include:

*Rocking parties worldwide including engagements in Asia, Australia, Europe, Canada, South America, Scandinavia, and countless venues throughout the US and in his home base of San Francisco’s Bay Area.

*Played alongside some of the biggest names in the industry including De La Soul & DJ Maseo, Prince Paul, A-Trak (Fools Gold), Janelle Monae, Z-Trip, Fishbone, Quest Love (The Roots), DJ Premier (Gang Starr), MF Doom, Triple Threat DJs, Pete Rock, Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Mayer Hawthorne (Stones Throw), Nu-Mark (Jurassic Five), Rob Swift (X-Ecutioners), Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Tribe Called Quest), Jazzy Jeff, DJ Spinna, Large Professor, The Beat Junkies, DJ Q-Bert, The Eh! Team DJs, DJ Craze, DJ Klever, Faust & Shortee, Zion I & The Grouch, Latyrx, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Dan The Automator, Das Efx, Hieroglyphics, Boot Camp Click, Rich Medina, DJ Muggs (Cypress Hill), Jazzy Jay, DJ Scratch (EPMD), The Bladerunners, Spinderella (Salt & Pepa), and many more.

*Produced music for and collaborated with filmmakers, award winning documentarians, Grammy nominated vocalists, and groundbreaking visual artists. Contributed film score to the feature length documentary “A Lovely Day” (as The Midnite Sons). Musical contributor to Michael Rapaport’s Tribe Called Quest documentary, “Beats, Rhymes, & Life, + numerous other solo projects and collaborations.

*Owner/operator of Platurn Productions as DJ and Event/Music Producer. Founded the Oakland Faders in 2000 with partner DJ Spair and the revered 45 Sessions back in 2010, the preeminent outlet for 7” culture on the West Coast of the United States.

She tells us the freedoms she has experienced by living the Van Life while still trying to teach remotely and establish any vestige of a live music circuit during the height of the pandemic. Mainly, she just expressed gratitude for her good fortune, finally settling(for now) in Nashville and taking the bad times as opportunities for growth. She also blesses us with a performance of her original songs!

LEAH T is bound to dazzle any audience with her smooth vocals, funky piano chops, and irresistible charm. LEAH T has spent much of her life in the Twin Cities honing her craft as a uniquely creative singer/songwriter. Her many years spent studying the piano have transformed her into a dynamic solo performer as well as a magnetic frontwoman.
After calling St. Paul, Minnesota her home for 24 years, LEAH T made the decision to move towards the Pacific coast and quickly dove head first into the Seattle music scene in 2015. She recruited The Baked Goods to back her solo project and further enrich the music's harmonic texture and deepen the groove. Leah T released her sophomore EP, Feeling things., in the fall of 2018. She also spent 2020 getting her DIY fingers dirty with a new release each month, most of which were accompanied by a unique music video. While still pursuing her original project, she was quickly scooped up by a number of local bands as a strong, supporting keyboardist and vocalist.
In 2020, the artist community was one of many groups that suffered greatly during the pandemic. With live performances at a standstill and real time collaboration with bandmates nearly impossible, Leah T was forced to make decisions she felt would be in the best interest of her career and overall well being. In December, 2020, she moved into a converted cargo van in attempts to travel the country as safely as possible, chase inspiration, and grow as an artist and an individual. The journey took her from Seattle to Florida with a slew of stops in between. Leah returned to Seattle in the summer of 2021 but knew her adventure was far from over. In November, 2021, she hit the road again with a plan to plant roots in Nashville. During the next year, we can anticipate further releases and funky collaborations in unlikely locations.

It features a musical performance by Beforia, interviews with the band & their drummer Rene Escovedo, and Aaron Brodkin producer of What the Pod F Bang Bang. Rene shares his experience growing up in a family of Latin Jazz Royalty, what it's like to diverge from the Escovedo sound and his life changing moment. For Aaron, a high school friend, he holds no punches as he instantly rips Sam a proverbial new one. Well, for Khafre Jay canvassing affluent neighborhoods with an "End White Supremacy" shirt and a mission to raise money to educate youth of all backgrounds through Hip Hop is a start. The founder & Executive Director of Hip Hop for Change sat down with host Sam Jack for a real, uncut conversation about race, the current political climate, the recent protests & outrage towards injustice at the hands of the police across the country. Most importantly he talks about Hip Hop for Change is working positively in the community to dispel the negative stereotypes of hip hop and act as a catalyst for change in the community.

For people concerned with the lack of positive art in our communities, Hip Hop For Change Inc. is the nonprofit that educates all people about the power of Hip Hop Culture and empowers them with a platform to express themselves through the arts.

The corporate media presents Hip Hop music and culture as a grotesque array of negative stereotypes, embracing criminality, sexism, homophobia, materialism, and domination culture. These corporate representations are part of a historical legacy of oppression of black and brown people; propaganda that demonizes and objectifies people of color is the ideological basis for the legitimization of oppression and prejudice.

Corporate stereotypes of Hip Hop culture--and by extension, the creators and participants of that culture--dehumanize us and affect the way we are perceived. There is a direct relationship between this dehumanization and the criminalization of people of color, police brutality, and public acceptance of those phenomena. Most people learn about cultures they are unfamiliar with through the media, internalizing narratives that place us as second-class citizens.

In addition, the corporate co-optation of Hip Hop culture has created a situation where our community’s platform of self-expression has been eclipsed and replaced with a limited, insulting narrative that affects our understanding of what our Hip Hop is, and what Hip Hop can be. Our culture has been stolen, repackaged, and sold back to us; this limits our cultural efficacy, as well as our ability, freedom, and initiative to talk about and organize around issues that affect our community. Our children have grown to become consumers of a bastardized version of Hip Hop that is devoid of its roots, rather than creators of their own self-expression.

HipHopForChange seeks to address these injustices of representation through education, community building, and the creation of a platform for people who identify with Hip Hop culture to express their true voices, selves, and culture. We create a space that emphasizes and encourages the root values of Hip Hop culture: peace, love, unity, and having fun.

He's a freelance writer, mainly for Thrillist where he held a full time Editor role for a number of years. He's the frontman of Black Crystal Wolf Kids, a rocking cover band that will blow the lid off of your party. He was on a Travel Channel show, Trip Testers, that spawned out of his food reviews from Thrillist. He's got many irons in many fires and that fire burns hot with energy. That energy fuels his passion and is portrayed in his lust for life and cheerful demeanor. We talk about adopting cats amid shelter in place, learning to shift a multiple piece band's performance to live streaming a variety show. Adapting and evolving while keeping an optimistic outlook seems to be the key. For jeff, he acknowledges the extremely good nature of timing in his success but also the hard work he put in to pay his dues. While the Travel Channel show was a blast, it was a 6 year journey in all from concept to the last two years of it being on air. That for example is the long road of entertainment. Diversity, like investing, seems to be the key to longevity in his endeavors, Jeff is by no means slowing down or admitting defeat in any realm.

Also, please donate to Jeff's fundraiser to help fight cancer! A donation is a "Vote" for him to win Man of the Year in the campaign! See link below.

Inspired by the audience participation of the Flaming Lips, the anything-goes attitude of The Henry Clay People, and the over-the-toppedness of 80s tribute bands like Fast Times, Black Crystal Wolf Kids are the world's first indie-rock tribute band, paying costumed, sing-along-encouraged homage to the best music of right now (The Killers! MGMT! Billie Eilish!) as well as indie's storied past (The Pixies! The Talking Heads! The Cure!).

That attitude's also led to on-stage appearances from members of some of the country's best actual indie-rock bands, from members of #1 rockers fun. to hitmakers Cage the Elephant to festival top-liners Lord Huron, with near-nightly sit ins from among the scene's indie cognoscenti. "I guess," Miller says, "sometimes even serious musicians like to have a little fun themselves."

When he's not eating delicious food/ drinking delicious drinks/ doing ridiculous things he's the band leader of Black Crystal Wolf Kids, the world's first indie-rock tribute band; you can also see his byline in publications like The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard, and Relix.

Throughout his professional career, I have collaborated with teams at Apple, Amazon, Sony, HBO, and Lucasfilm. He's worked with authors, editors, and artists to push creative boundaries. I thrive on generously sharing ideas, resources, and information with my peers. Whether it's bringing people together through an application or developing a dynamic brand to change the world, inspiring teams to yield inspirational results.

With over twenty years of design and strategic art direction, Holden is an experienced leader who works with high-performing companies across a variety of industries. By working with inspired and driven organizations, he's aspired to create beautiful, exciting, and positive experiences.

That why he's not afraid to charge $100/hr for his services. He knows his self worth. He also knows he has to calculate the time he takes building his resume, curating his portfolio and honing his craft through practice & training. All of that is his time, but it adds value to his skills and services justifying his rate. In addition all of the experience he has accumulated over 20 years has added value as well.

We catch up on our personal lives, talk about how his role as Executive Chair at the SF Chapter of Surfriders has renewed a sense of purpose. With that new found purpose, he wants to apply that sensibility to finding new work that aligns with is core values. Join us in our discussion! Add a comment and give your opinion.

From working at Telltale Games to twitch.tv and what exactly goes into developing, designing and programming a game.

I had the pleasure of working with Tulley o a few 48hr Film Projects over the years, so when it was time for him to make his own video game with live action elements, it was a no brainer to team up again. Viral Media Network produced the Video Production elements to his new experimental independent game called Splinter. VMN secured location, crew, gear as well as assisted with storyboarding, 2D graphic elements & other coordination. We chat about that experience as we shot all of the scenes over the course of 4 weekends. Then he programmed the game side of it with a few colleagues over the course of a few months. The end result is an immersive experimental video game experience.

"...He is known only as Richie Cunning and there are very few people that even know of his existence. Countless believers have reported first-hand sightings, claiming to have seen him drinking from a flask on a bus station bench in the middle of the night or even fast asleep on a bus station bench in the middle of the night. However, gentlemen and scholars both maintain that he is nothing more than a myth. A drunken ghost in the collective subconscious of modern society. Many have tried to understand him, but there is only one way to truly understand that which is Richie Cunning. You must leave your world behind and step into his realm....a place thought to exist only in fairy tales and ugly areas of downtown San Francisco. Your journey begins now...."

Host DJ LumbaJack chats with Richie Cunning and Steb "DJ BAD DJ" Montez amid the Shelter in Place, how that is affecting their creative process, if at all and the etiquette of running without a mask. Perhaps none were as prepared to live such solitude as Richie who already lives an introverted life, lost in his thoughts at home with his words composed together the only way to process such ponder.

Live shows being his main exposure to the the outside world, whether performing or witnessing, that is the only thing he is missing from the Shelter in Place. Otherwise, he is eating well, exercising & alone to further ponder thoughts, composing them down into the lyrics of his music. As we further discuss this process, Richie laments on all the perfection he's strived for & comes to a realization: Perfection slows down the process. He's spent the past several years striving for just that, while slowing himself down. Sometimes, you can be your worst critic. In that vein, we talk about juggling a full time job and how that balances his artistic creativity. Fortunately, he is blessed to be working at the Academy of Science and helps with their live events. He talks a bit how they have had to shift to live streaming events, and how well received they have been despite the disconnect and other challenges.

For Steb aka DJ Bad DJ, he has a nice home studio he's been able to stay focused with. Unfortunately, the radio station he works at, KRML has furloughed him, but he focuses on spending time with is family while being able to work remotely on music production.

Check out the whole interview, as we was poetically about the Elbo Room, Pandemic Conspiracies and the hot new trend of VS battles on IG Live.

Things get silly at times but we are always focused on giving insight and opinion to living life independently.
