Anthropic faced a Pentagon ultimatum: sign a deal allowing Claude to be used for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons by Friday, or lose the contract. Dario stood firm. By end of the week, OpenAI had swooped in and closed a nearly identical deal.

The hosts go deep on whether Dario made a principled stand or a costly miscalculation. Brylan draws parallels to Google's Project Maven fallout and argues reliability — not ideology — was the real driver behind Anthropic's refusal on autonomous weapons.
