What about when Jesus leads somewhere we would not have chosen?

How do you know when to say yes or no to a good opportunity? Acts 16:6–10 shows us that following God's direction isn't simply about finding an open door—it's learning to discern which opportunities are actually ours to walk through.

If you're anything like me, good opportunities are hard to turn down.

Someone needs help. An opportunity opens. Somebody says, "We really need you." And because it's good, we assume the answer must be yes.

But does every good opportunity automatically become our responsibility?

In Acts 16, Paul and his companions have a good, godly plan: preach the gospel. Yet the Holy Spirit redirects them—twice—before leading them toward Macedonia.

That gives busy disciples an important reminder:

An open door is not automatically an assignment. Sometimes the Holy Spirit loves us enough to redirect us.

Here's what I'm learning:

Capability is not the same thing as calling.

Just because you can carry something doesn't mean God handed it to you.

So before your next yes, ask two questions:

1. Does this align with what God has already entrusted to me?

Consider your relationship with Jesus, family, work, health, ministry, and current responsibilities. Is this opportunity helping you steward those things faithfully—or pulling you away from them?

2. Am I being led by peace or pressured by fear?

Am I sensing God's direction, or am I afraid of disappointing someone? Am I responding to God's calling, or do I simply like feeling needed?

Good people, fear is a terrible decision-maker.

You don't want your calendar built by fear, your calling shaped by guilt, or your life controlled by somebody else's urgency.

And here's the freedom:

You are not the answer to every need. Jesus is.

We're His disciples. We're not the Messiah.

You don't have to walk through every door just because it opens.

Your job isn't to do everything.

Your job is to follow Jesus faithfully.

What does real repentance look like, and how do you come back to God after you've sinned? Psalm 51:10–12 shows us that biblical repentance isn't about humiliation or earning God's love again—it's about telling the truth, receiving mercy, and allowing God to restore what sin has damaged.

Why is it so hard to simply admit when we're wrong?

We explain.

We minimize.

We defend ourselves.

We blame somebody else.

We manage the story so we look just a little better than we actually were.

And when it comes to sin, we can do the same thing with God.

But Psalm 51 gives us another way.

After David's sin with Bathsheba and his confrontation with the prophet Nathan, David finally stops hiding. Instead of protecting his reputation, he prays:

"Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

David doesn't just ask God to remove the consequences.

He asks God to change him.

That's what we're talking about in this episode of The Busy Disciple Podcast: the courage to repent.

Because repentance is not God humiliating us.

Repentance is God restoring us.

Repentance is not me talking God into loving me again.

Repentance is me returning to the God whose mercy was already waiting for me.

God already knows.

You're not giving Him new information when you confess.

You're finally agreeing with what He already sees.

And there's freedom in that.

Because hiding is exhausting.

Defending yourself is exhausting.

Managing the story is exhausting.

Repentance may be hard—but hiding is heavier.

So here's the challenge for this week:

Identify one area where you need to stop defending yourself and begin telling God the truth.

Maybe it's anger.

Pride.

Resentment.

Dishonesty.

Gossip.

Something you're looking at.

The way you've treated someone.

Or a pattern you've spent more time explaining than confessing.

Name it.

And then pray David's prayer:

"Create in me a pure heart, O God."

Don't start with, "God, fix everything around me."

Start with:

"God, change me."

And if you've hurt another person, repentance may mean taking another step—apologizing, making something right, or bringing someone you trust into the situation.

Because you cannot repent of what you're still committed to defending.

Tell the truth. Receive grace. Make it right where you can. And let God restore what sin has damaged.

Repentance isn't the end of the road.

It's the road home.

How do you stay teachable when you're already experienced, knowledgeable, or leading others? Acts 18:24–28 shows us that spiritual growth requires humility, curiosity, and the willingness to receive correction—even when we're already good at what we do.

Apollos was gifted.

He knew Scripture. He was passionate. He spoke boldly. He was already making an impact.

And he still had something to learn.

When Priscilla and Aquila heard Apollos teaching, they recognized that his understanding was incomplete. So they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately.

And I love what happens next.

Apollos received it.

He didn't become defensive.
He didn't pull out his résumé.
He didn't say, "Well, I already know that."

He remained teachable.

And because he was willing to learn, God continued to grow him and use him.

Some of the most dangerous words a disciple can say are:

"I already know that."

So here's the challenge for this week.

Find someone you trust and ask them:

"What is one area where you believe I need to grow?"

And when they answer, resist the temptation to explain yourself.

Listen.

Pray.

Stay curious.

Let Jesus use the people around you to continue forming you into the person He's calling you to become.

Because you can be gifted and still need to be taught.

And a growing disciple is a teachable disciple.

One of the reasons I love the Gospel of Luke is because it constantly reminds me to pay attention to the people everyone else walks past.

Luke introduces us to a Jesus who notices the unnoticed, welcomes the unwanted, and pursues the people the world has already written off. Throughout his Gospel, we meet tax collectors, widows, outsiders, the poor, the sick, and sinners—and over and over again, Jesus moves toward them with compassion, grace, and truth.

In Luke 19:1–10, we meet Zacchaeus, a man everyone knew—but no one truly saw. While the crowd viewed him as a traitor and a sinner, Jesus stopped, looked up into the tree, called him by name, and invited Himself into his home.

That one moment changed Zacchaeus' life forever.

If there's one Gospel that never lets me get comfortable, it's Mark.

Everything moves quickly. Jesus is always on the move—teaching, healing, serving, confronting evil, and calling ordinary people to follow Him. Mark's Gospel is full of urgency because the mission of Jesus is urgent.

But what I love most about Mark isn't just the pace.

It's the picture of Jesus.

Matthew shows us Jesus the King.
Mark shows us Jesus the Servant King.

In Mark 10:35–45, Jesus completely redefines greatness. While His disciples are arguing about positions of honor, Jesus teaches them that greatness in the Kingdom isn't measured by power, recognition, or status—it's measured by humble service.

Then He points to Himself:

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."

But Psalm 90:12 reminds us: "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."
