We catch up with rapper Kid Quill! Kid Quill - Mitchell Quilleon Brown, known by his stage name Kid Quill, is a recording artist from Indiana. In October of 2016, he released his album The Name Above the Title, which charted top ten on the iTunes Hip Hop Charts and a Regional Heatseeker on Billboard. Following that release, he went on his first national tour as support. In September of 2017, he released his second studio album 94.3 The Reel, which also landed in the top ten on the iTunes charts. This record presented opportunities in the Fall to regionally test the headline market and support a national tour in the Spring. In the Spring 2018, he finished a 47 city domestic tour as support for SoMo and Devvon Terrell on their runs. Dave was born and raised in Northford, Connecticut having graduated from North Branford High School. Dave went on to graduate from the University of New Haven in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Communication. In 2019, he graduated Summa Laude with a Master of Science in Sports Journalism from Quinnipiac University. His thesis documentary called “More than a Game” aired on CPTV in the fall of 2019. The 30-minute film follows around five men’s league hockey players in the twilight of their careers still playing the game they love. Dave is a passionate sports fan with allegiances to the New York Rangers, Mets, and Giants. He also dreams of the day the Whalers come back to Hartford! When Dave is not at work, you can find him at the gym, around the rink, or hitting the links. We're back for 2021! We talk with the former play-by-play broadcaster for the Los Angeles Angels Victor Rojas! Victor Rojas - Victor Rojas returns to the television booth for his 11th season as the play-by-play voice of the Angels. Rojas will also join fellow broadcaster Mark Gubicza for an 11th season as an analyst for “Angels Live”, the Angels pre-and post-game shows. During the 2011 MLB playoffs, TBS welcomed Rojas as a play-by-play voice during the National League Divisional Series (Milwaukee vs. Arizona). Rojas joined the Angels broadcast team prior to the 2010 season after serving as a studio host for the MLB Network since its inception. Before joining MLB Network in late December 2008, Rojas spent five seasons (2004-08) as a member of the Texas Rangers television and radio broadcast teams, calling play-by-play as well as providing analysis. Rojas went to Texas after spending the 2003 season doing both play-by-play and analysis for Arizona Diamondbacks broadcasts. Prior to breaking into Major League broadcasting with the D-backs, Rojas spent two seasons calling television and radio play-by-play for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League, where he was also hired as the team’s Assistant General Manager before becoming General Manager. A former pitcher in the Angels organization, Rojas’ career eventually led to coaching. The son of former Major League All-Star and Angels manager Cookie Rojas, Victor was on the Florida Marlins baseball staff in 1993 and served as pitching coach at Rio Grande in the Texas-Louisiana League in 1994. The Miami, FL native played his college baseball at the College of the Desert in Palm Springs, California, and Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. His affinity for having absurd life experiences helped create his storytelling style of comedy and the fact that he looks like a youth pastor made sure he kept it clean. His wild stories from negotiating a better deal during a mugging, surviving a plane crash, and being tackled inside the NSA will leave you laughing and captivated. Jules will always describe himself as a musician before he’s a gamer, but obviously, he held a controller years before he held a guitar. Even though he was born on June 11th, 1991, his first experiences with video games were playing the NES and Atari. His first game ever was the original Super Mario Bros. and soon moved on to games like The Legend of Zelda and Castlevania. He then played games for the Nintendo 64 for many years, even after the GameCube and other consoles came out. Jamey‎ Rootes - Jamey‎ Rootes has been one of Houston's leading executives for more than two decades. He currently serves as President of the Houston Texans and is responsible for all business functions of the club. Since joining the Texans, Rootes has overseen the team's efforts to secure stadium-naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club's successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team's identity, and developed the team's highly acclaimed customer service strategy. Under Rootes' leadership, the Texans have earned many distinctions, including numerous "Crystal Awards" and most recently two American Business Awards for marketing excellence. J.D. Power & Associates recognized the team for providing the best fan experience in the NFL and featured the Texans as a service success story in their book entitled "Satisfaction." The Texans were also recognized with Sports Business Journal's PRISM Award, which is given annually to the top major professional sports team based on business excellence criteria. In 2019, the Texans extended their sellout streak to 185 consecutive home games – a Houston NFL record and a testament to the quality of service and entertainment provided by the organization on gameday. As a result, the Texans have consistently been recognized as one of the most valuable professional sports franchises both in the NFL and globally, as measured by a variety of business publications. Rootes also serves as President of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (LSSE), a sports management agency associated with the Texans. LSSE has been a catalyst for some of Houston's most significant sporting events. Under Rootes' leadership, LSSE created and now manages the Texas Bowl, Houston's annual college football bowl game, as well as the Texas Kickoff, an annual college football game. In addition to college football games, Rootes has overseen the production of many soccer games put on by LSSE such as COPA America in 2016, the Manchester Derby in 2017, and an International Champions Cup match between global soccer powers Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in 2019. Sports Business Journal twice selected Rootes as a member of its distinguished "Forty Under 40" list of leading sports executives, and in 2014 he was named a finalist for the Global Sports Executive of the Year by the Stadium Business Awards. Rootes was recognized in 2017 as the first-ever Houston Business Journal's Business Person of the Year after serving as chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership. This time we are joined by baseball trailblazer Justine Siegal as she talks about her story of coming into baseball, what it took for her to break down the barriers of gender in baseball, her foundation, and more! About Justine Siegal - When she was 13, Justine's coach told her that girls are only supposed to play softball - not baseball. At that moment, she vowed she’d never quit. At the age of 16, she set her sights on becoming a college baseball coach. Despite being ridiculed, laughed at, and told no man would ever listen to a woman on the baseball field, she worked toward her goal, growing even more determined to realize her dream. After earning her Ph.D. in sports psychology from Springfield College, Justine became the first woman to coach for a Major League Baseball Organization (Oakland Athletics, 2015) and to throw batting practice to an MLB team during Spring Training (Cleveland Indians, 2011). In 2016, she served as Mental Performance Coach for Team Israel at the MLB World Baseball Classic Qualifier. She served as a guest pro baseball coach in Japan and Mexico (2019). Justine is currently the Baseball Coordinator for the tv show, A League of Their Own. Justine is giving back to the next generation with Baseball For All, a nonprofit she founded to provide opportunities for girls to play, coach, and lead in baseball. She is an inductee of the National Women's Sports Museum and has been named as an Everyday Hero by ESPNW. USA Baseball nominated her as an IOC Woman of the Year. Her A's jersey is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and her baseball card is in Topps' 2020 Allen & Ginter collection. Justine is the proud mother of a fiercely independent and joyful 23-year-old. We talk with comedian Steve Hofstetter! Steve Hofstetter - Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter is often called the hardest working man in show-business. With all due respect to the late James Brown. Hofstetter's national TV debut came on ESPN's Quite Frankly, where Stephen A. Smith yelled at him for three minutes. Hofstetter has also appeared on CBS' "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood", VH1's "Countdown", Sundance's "On the Road in America", and ABC's "Barbara Walter's Special", where he thankfully did not cry. He is the host and executive producer of "Laughs" on Fox networks, where he only cries occasionally. One of the top booked acts on the college circuit, the original writer for collegehumor.com has also released six albums. Hofstetter has written humor columns for the New York Times, SportsIllustrated.com, and NHL.com, where he publicly admitted to being a Ranger fan. After hosting Four Quotas on Sirius Satellite Radio for two seasons, Hofstetter moved to broadcast radio, and his Sports Minute (Or So) was syndicated on over 170 stations and in over 30 newspapers. Hofstetter's second live comedy album ("Cure For the Cable Guy") reached #20 on Billboard's comedy charts. His third album ("Dark Side of the Room") was the first-ever pay-what-you-want" comedy album since people were going to steal it anyway. His fourth album consisted of an hour of 100% ad-libbed material, which is, frankly, nuts. And his fifth album hit #1 on iTunes' comedy charts, which is also a bit nuts. Hofstetter's brutal tour schedule consists of over 100 colleges and dozens of clubs every year and is fueled by immense online popularity, tons of press, and a Prius with great gas mileage. He reached 200,000 friends on Facebook (still the world record), 400,000 more on MySpace, and high shelves in grocery stores. While Hofstetter's live shows are routinely sold out, he is best known for his writing, first published at age 15, mainly to impress girls. At 18, he co-founded "Sports Jerk of the Week", an irreverent website featured by press like USA Today's Baseball Weekly, Sports Illustrated, and CNN. And at 20, Hofstetter took a year off of school to head up web content for the New York Yankees. The Yankees won the World Series that year, which would have been wonderful if they hadn't beaten Hofstetter's Mets. Yes, he's also a Mets fan. Poor kid. While an undergraduate at Columbia University, Hofstetter was a well-read columnist for the Columbia Daily Spectator and a voice of the Lions. After a summer writing for Maxim, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated for Kids, Hofstetter syndicated his column in several newspapers. This week we're joined by comedian and host of many podcasts Dan Cummins! Dan Cummins - Dan Cummins is a stand-up comedian and podcast host. His first comedy album, Revenge is Near, distributed by Warner Bros. Records, was ranked as one of the top 10 comedy CDs of 2009 by Punchline Magazine. His first hour-long special for Comedy Central, titled Crazy With A Capital F, premiered on May 29, 2010. He was a co-host for The Playboy Morning Show and has hosted his own podcasts, Timesuck, since 2016 and Scared to Death, with his wife Lynze, since 2019. In 2000, Cummins performed at the open mic of the now-defunct Laugh’s Comedy Cafe inside the Season Ticket bar near the Spokane Arena. In 2001, Cummins entered the Seattle Comedy Competition, finishing as runner-up. There he met David Crowe, with whom he formed a two-man stand-up and variety act, COBDOG, (Crowe On Bass, Dan On Guitar), the highlight of which was having a radio-friendly version of one of their sketches, titled "At The Coffee Shop," making The Bob & Tom Show best-of CD, Bob And Tom Gone Wild. The duo split in 2003. In 2005, Cummins performed at the New Faces showcase at the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival, catching the attention of both Comedy Central and The Late Late Show talent booker. In 2006, Cummins performed on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, his first performance recorded for television. A month later, he made his network television debut, performing on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Also, in 2006, he performed at his second major festival, the HBO Las Vegas Comedy Festival. The year 2007 started off with Cummins performing at the Comedy Central South Beach Comedy Festival and then booking approximately 100 college dates at the NACA Nationals college booking convention in Nashville. Cummins then recorded his first televised stand-up special, Comedy Central Presents Dan Cummins, in August at the Hudson Theater in New York. In 2008, Cummins performed at nearly 100 schools and also advanced to the semi-finals of Last Comic Standing, Season 6. In 2009, Dan’s Comedy Central Presents was voted third favorite by fans in Comedy Central’s annual Standup Showdown. Shortly after, Comedy Central bought the rights to air a one-hour special. On October 17, 2009, in front of a sold-out audience at the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane, Washington, Cummins recorded his first one-hour Comedy Central special, Crazy With A Capital F. It's initial showing on Comedy Central aired May 29, 2010. The accompanying CD was released on May 25, 2010; the DVD version was released on June 8, 2010. Later in June 2009, Cummins performed at the second-annual Rooftop Comedy Aspen Comedy Festival. He made two additional television appearances in 2009, appearing on an episode of Byron Allen’s Comedy.TV, and on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien the day before Thanksgiving. The year 2009 also included the release of Cummins' first nationally distributed CD, Revenge is Near, on June 23 via Warner Brothers Records. It peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Comedy Charts, and Punchlinemagazine.com put it in their top 10 list for the best comedy CDs of 2009. In 2010, Cummins appeared in season two of G4’s The International Ladies Show, and has moved to Santa Monica, California, where he began working with Creative Artists Agency. Cummins also attempted to produce several television projects. Since early-2009, filmmaker Mike Newman has been filming an ongoing documentary on Cummins’ stand-up career. Widely regarded as the top recruit in the nation in high school, Gemelos has overcome a number of knee injuries throughout her college career at USC to go on to be drafted in the third round of the 2012 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx. Despite her injuries, sustaining 5 ACL tears in 6 years, Gemelos remained one of the most skilled players in the game, won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2011 World University Games, and is a former National Player of the Year and McDonald’s All-American. Jacki continues to play overseas and in 2020 signed with the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystic. Jacki was born November 22, 1988, in Stockton, California. She is the daughter of Linda and Steve Gemelos. She has two sisters, Johnna and Zayna. Her father Steve Gemelos, of Greek descent, played college basketball at Weber State and San Joaquin Delta, followed by two years of professional basketball in Greece. Welcome back to Mad Props! This time we are joined by Washington Spirit player Jordan Thompson! Jordan was a decorated Gonzaga Athlete and was selected with the 50th pick in the NWSL Draft in 2022. When she was two days into training camp, she tore her ACL. About Jordan Thompson - Originally from Sumner, Washington, Thompson earned Second Team All-West Coast Conference honors in 2021 and started all 81 games she played in during her five seasons at Gonzaga. Thompson also recorded six goals and two assists in her career with the Bulldogs, including three goals in six shots on goal throughout her senior campaign. Before college, she left Sumner High School as one of the greatest athletes in school history. Sumner finished second in the 4A SPSL and Thompson took home the league MVP. She earned The News Tribune's 2016 All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year and helped guide the Spartans to the state quarterfinals as a senior. As a freshman, she scored the game-winning goal in the Class 2A state championship game for Sumner. Proving her all-around athlete status, Thompson set six school records in one season of track. She was also a member of the Washington Premier club team. Carter Capps - Capps worked out of the bullpen for the Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins from 2012-2015, missed 2016 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and returned to pitch for the San Diego Padres in 2017. Capps had a 100 mph heater, but he’s best known for an unconventional delivery that elicited no shortage of controversy, and ultimately a rule change.
