Chiara is a perfect ambassador of what the next generation is all about. She is bi-cultural and has lived and studies in several continents. She is full of hope and dreams about her career and sees fashion has a global and glamorous industry. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado, Lala Drona has since published and exhibited her work internationally.  Her videos and paintings exploring digital spaces and the female gaze, were shown at the Cite des Arts de Paris.  Her work explores the monstrous feminine, alternate realities, and the void of the digital world.  The totality of her artwork contributes to, and exists within a fictional universe and mythology established online
and then recontextualized in the physical world through paint on canvas, performance, and sculpture. She is based in Paris, France.

What would you do if you had to start your dream job as a buyer, in charge of opening a new store in the fashion capital of the world, few weeks before Covid and the months long Lock down ?

How would handle that pressure ?

Well, that is exactly why I wanted to talk with Laure.

At that time, Laure was the buyer for footwear and lifestyle products for Kith Paris.

The iconic concept store created by Ronnie Fieg, with the pristine reputation of mixing streetwear brands, sneakers and luxury product, with a unique retail experience.

For their first store in the EU, Kith chose to open in Paris, few blocks from Avenue des Champs Elysées and Avenue Montaigne. It goes without saying that the project what a huge milestone for Kith, and that a lot of responsibilities were on Laure’s shoulders.

Which by the way, was only the second employee in France at that time and has never been a buyer before.

As you see, Laure is full of energy and grit and she doesn't give up easily. And with more than 10 years in the industry, between France and the USA, she has acquired a real expertise in wholesale, helping brands developed their businesses.

Hester is one my former student and I have helped her design her path into our industry.

And from day1, what has always surprises me was her passion and dedication for sustainability. Every time she talked about it she was vibrant and full of energy.

I wanted to have her in this first season, because Isabella’s journey is the perfect illustration that there is not ONE UNIQUE way to arrive to your professional objective. Today we are  going to talk about her first book, Corps Noirs, which could be translated in english as “Black Bodies”. Before I tell you all about it, let me tell you about its origin story. It all started by a simple question:

How many black women have been on the covers of fashion magazine in the last 15 years ?

And from that question, an entire journey started for Christelle.

First, it became her master thesis for the IFM where she graduated 3 year ago.

And with the support of friends and family, it became an entire book.

From that question, Christelle started to investigate the reality to be a black model in the fashion industry! the history, the stereotype, the prejudice and also the human cost.

Through this book, Christelle shine a light on, what we could call the dark of the industry.

However, this book goes way beyond that.

It’s first and foremost, the questions of a young professional trying to make sense of what she sees, discovers and experience. This book, it’s also really intimate, full of personal anecdotes and stories.

For me, it was an opportunity to ask myself more questions, to increase my awareness and to open my eyes on some of the realities of our industry.

My role with this podcast is to help you DESIGN a SUCCESSFUL LIFE AND CAREER in one of the most glamorous and magical industry on the planet. But also one of the most competitive and demanding ones.

For that reason, I’ve interviewed fashion professionals at DIFFERENT STAGES of their career, in order to decode their best PRACTICES, TACTICS and STRATEGIES

In this first season, we are going to talk to a large diversity of people from different nationalities. Some of them are French, American, Taiwanese or Brazilians. Some are graduate students finishing their last internship, others are seasoned professionals with experience in the most coveted brands: Chanel, Dior, Off-White or Balenciaga. We will also discover different types of job positions: from designer, buyer or Store Director to Culture manager or Style Expert.

Before you jump in and listen the first episode, few information regarding the format of this podcast. All the episode are between 1h or 2h hours long. I have chosen this format because, i believe this is the best way to go deep within each individual story and get the best insights possible. Even though most episodes are in English, some of them are in French. So if you are learning french, take this opportunity to practice, if you are not, please BARE with me and enjoy the English friendly ones. 1. If you are not from Europe, invest early in studying fashion history and learn to speak english and french.
2. Get in the habit to network and contact professionals but lower your expectations. You might receive no news at the beginning but eventually you will.
3. Remember that your point of view as young professional could is very valuable. Your bring new idea, new ways of working and new knowledge. So trust yourself and develop an portfolio with some of your ideas.
4. While you are doing a internship, be at the service of your manager and remember to learn well the fundamentals before pretending to work on more glamourous tasks. You are part of a system and every contribution counts.

Vous vous demandez certainement pourquoi j’ai invité un restaurateur à venir parler dans un podcast dédié aux carrières dans la mode.

Dans sa vie antérieure, Laurent à passer 20 ans dans l’industrie de la mode et du luxe. Il a travaillé pour Franck & Fils, Le Bon Marché, 24S et les Galeries Lafayette. Il a débuté sa carrière sur le terrain, en tant que responsable de vente, pour ensuite terminer comme Directeur des Achats. Plus de 20 ans à voir des défilés, découvrir des designers, manager des équipes et gérer des business unit.

C’est typiquement le genre d’histoire que j’adore car elle illustre parfaitement ma philosophie en tant que coach. Une carrière est faite d’évolution, de disruption mais aussi de révolution. 

Et il n’est pas toujours simple de savoir comment affronter toutes ces étapes. 

Dans ces moments, on peut être pris de doutes, on peut avoir des difficultés à s’imaginer faisant autre chose ou bien être dépendant du regard des autres, de son intitulé de poste ou de son statut.

Dans la première partie de notre conversation, Laurent revient justement sur la genèse de son projet, les ressources qu’il a mobilisé pour construire son projet et les étapes pour mener sa reconversion.
