A brief discussion follows and then we move our focus back to:

3) 3:49– Nelly as an Unreliable vs. Reliable character. We talk about her perception of the children, and what that says about her reliability or unreliability as a narrator.

4) 9:16–Birds: We segue for a second back to a discussion on birds and what they symbolize for the characters to cut through the bias. Through this symbolism, Brontë may be giving us an unbiased view of the characters. If Heathcliff is a Cuckoo, Cathy is a larch, and Catherine is a lapwing. And we go back into Nellie's possible unreliability as a narrator.

5) 12:20–Fairies: We continue our symbolic discussion juxtaposed against Nellie with a discussion a fairies and what they symbolize given Cathy and Catherine's character. We also discuss how Cathy is free in ways that her mother was never allowed to be, and discuss whether this is an elevated class structure, or whether the Linton's were not just better people–regardless of class–than the Earnshaws. And we discuss how Heathcliff takes advantage of this for his plot.

6) 20:46–We discuss the Cliffhanger and the New "Love" triangle: We see that Cathy–despite being forced to marry him by Heathcliff– doesn't love Linton, and would rather not marry him, and we also discuss how the Linton's protect their female progeny in a way that is a bit ahead of its time. We also get into the new "love" triangle–that in some regards mirrors the old love triangle in that there isn't much love involved in it at all. History repeats itself! We just hope all characters end happier than their predecessors.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Episode 1: Chapters 1-3 / Vol1–chps 1-3 (April 13)
Episode 2: Chapters 4-9 / Vol 1, chps 4-9 (April 20)
Episode 3: Chapters 10-17 / Vol 1, chps 10-14 – Vol 2. chps 1-3 (April 27)
Episode 4: Chapters 18-27 / Vol 2. chps 4-13 (May 4)
Episode 5: Chapters 28-34 /Vol 2. chapters 14-20 (May 11)

Claudine Gittel Aguilar

<podcast:transcript url="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/4497a031-e1bc-4490-8cd9-1ce2fe17ad58/episodes/a07e4aba-47d5-4094-9206-4026d421f667/transcripts.txt" type="text/plain"/><itunes:summary>
Wuthering Heights Ep 4 (p2): 👶🏾 🥺 "The Kids Ain't Alright" 😢👧🏻
This is part 2 of a 2 part episode.

📚 Chapters 18-27 OR Vol 2 chps 4-13 📚
❤️🖤 In which we discuss: 🖤 ❤️

1) And so we continue: Our discussion about Linton and why he's so problematic for going along with Heathcliff's plan, and Heathcliff's revenge

2) 1:18–Revenge: Michelle asks a question about Heathcliff's revenge: Why is Heathcliff so hellbent on Revenge if all it does is make him more and more unhappy? There's been a huge time jump. We are now with the second generation of characters in the story. The children are all grown up. We start with our themes: 1) Nature v. Nurture, 2) Nellie as a Reliable v Unreliable narrator, 3) Heathcliff's character and revenge arch and abuse, 4) And our second love triangle with Wuthering Heights: The Next Gen.

2) 2:32 – A recap of the chapters. We launch into a Summary of the telenovela that is Chapters 18-27. It's been 18 years since Cathy died. And the children are now young teenagers. We find out what has happened to all our characters in the time since. And we find out what Cathy (Catherine and Edgar's daughter) and Linton (Heathcliff and Isabella's son) have been up to, we also meet Hareton (Hindley's son), and thus a new love triangle is established. We end our chapters in this section on a cliffhanger.

3) 20:16–Heathcliff's Villain arc and the Doubling of the Children. We discuss what Heathcliff has in store for the children and how haunted he is by Catherine's death (literally or figuratively though, that is then question). We discuss our frustration with Heathcliff's continued villain arc and the tragedy that is his character. We also discuss how Heathcliff hurts the children because of his obsession with vengeance. And we discuss how Hareton is a foil to Heathcliff's character and is a better man than either of his fathers: (Hindely, his biological father, and Heathcliff, his adoptive father). We also discuss the doubling that exists between the elder generation and the new generation of characters.

4) 28:58–The Doubling and Nature vs. Nurture: We continue the discussion of the doubling between the children and their parents, and go deeper into a Nature vs. Nurture conversation of why the children are the way they are. A discussion of Race and Class is had in connection to Hareton and his ability to rise in a way that Heathcliff never could, as well as discussion on Heathcliff's son Linton, and how he is so different than both his parents. We also have a quick discussion on chronic illness and Linton. We also talk about Cathy's relationship with Linton, and the problematic nature of Linton's character.

We hope you enjoy the show!

Episode 1: Chapters 1-3 / Vol1–chps 1-3 (April 13)
Episode 2: Chapters 4-9 / Vol 1, chps 4-9 (April 20)
Episode 3: Chapters 10-17 / Vol 1, chps 10-14 – Vol 2. chps 1-3 (April 27)
Episode 4: Chapters 18-27 / Vol 2. chps 4-13 (May 4)
Episode 5: Chapters 28-34 /Vol 2. chapters 14-20 (May 11)

Claudine Gittel Aguilar

<podcast:transcript url="https://hosting-media.riverside.com/media/podcasts/4497a031-e1bc-4490-8cd9-1ce2fe17ad58/episodes/53a97d7e-9a42-40a4-a3d0-23a7ede84378/transcripts.txt" type="text/plain"/><itunes:summary>
Wuthering Heights H Ep 4 (p1): 🥺 👶🏾 "The Kids Aren't Alright" 👧🏻 😢
This is part 1 of a 2 part episode!

📚 Chapters 18-27 OR Vol 2 chps 4-13 📚
❤️🖤 In which we discuss: 🖤 ❤️

1) And so it begins: A brief synopsis of where we are with the characters is where we start. Baby Don't Hurt Me" 💔💔

Wuthering Heights Episode 3: ❤️🖤 Is This Love? (Baby Don't Hurt Me) 💔💔
❤️🖤 In which we discuss: 🖤 ❤️
TRIGGER WARNING:
SA
Abuse: Physical, Psychological
Animal Cruelty

📚 Chapters 10-17 OR Vol 1. 10-14 and Vol. 2 1-3 📚

1:11–And So We Begin: We begin our discussion with Heathcliff's returning home and a quick summary of the themes of chapters 10-17 such as love and trauma bond and healthy relationships as well as characterization. We're not quite sure this is "The Greatest Love Story Ever Told"

3:39–A Brief Summary of the story so far in Chapters 10-17. We remind you where we left off in the novel with Catherine trying to choose between Linton and Heathcliff, and Heathcliff hearing Catherine's indecision, runs away. In Chapter 10 we fast forward. It's been 3 years, Catherine is now married, and Heathcliff returns hell bent on his revenge, and we give you the fallout of Heathcliff's vengeance trope, and the fallout from this "Love Triangle"

9:45–First Discussion: How does Heathcliff make his money, and how does it impact his relationships now that he's returned? How does society see him? What access does he now have to society? We discuss class, the lack of a "Name" –a family name– in the Victorian era.

15:17–Second Discussion: Despite having all this money, Heathcliff is hell-bent on revenge. We discuss the why's and how come's of this decision and what it says about Heathcliff as a character.

16:51–We get to Cathy and discuss this warped "Love" Triangle between Cathy and Linton and Cathy and Heathcliff. We discuss who Catherine is and what she wants and how there is a duality to her. She is torn between two worlds because she is not free to actually make decisions, and so she's torn between Linton and Heathcliff in the same way. And so through Catherine's indecision, we see Brontë's critique of society.

27:43 –We get into the rift that exists between Edgar Linton and Heathcliff. There is no love lost between these two! And they represent to sides of Catherine's needs and wants in society. We talk about the difference between these characters and why Catherine is torn between the two.

31:08 – We begin discussing Heathcliff's courting of Isabella as a perfect segue to how Isabella's character really exposing the trauma bonding and love that exists in these relationships. We discuss Isabella as a foil to Catherine, and why she falls for Heathcliff. We also explore Catherine's relationship with Isabella, and have a theory as to what her plan may have been with Isabella and Heathcliff to fulfill her own desires.

39:00–We continue our discussion with "What IS Love"? How do we know its really love and not just trauma bonding?

48:08–We discuss Catherine's pregnancy and the Climax of the novel. We discuss how Heathcliff tricks Hindley into giving up his inheritance. And how Heathcliff, after finding out that Catherine is pregnant, basically causes Catherine's demise as she dies in childbirth. Nellie becomes the mother figure for the baby as Edgar falls into a deep depression at the loss of his wife.

54:02–We discus Heathcliff's abuse of Isabella, and ATTEMPTED MURDER AGAINST A DOG (We are not ok).

We also discuss Isabella's growth and her badassery. We discuss how we fall in love with Isabella, and we LOATHE Heathcliff and his abuse of Isabella. We end with Heathcliff being a most villainous Coward.

🖤 Please excuse the audio, I didn't realize my mic was not working!
