She shares what she has been carrying, moving through, and grieving. And what the experience of writing her way back to herself has shown her.

What happens when you show up to write even though you are scared every single time? In this episode of Dear Mango, Mona sits down with two women who have been doing exactly that. Sade and Melissa reflect on grief, fear, self-judgment, and what it means to put something down on paper when every part of you says you have nothing to say. This is not just a conversation about writing. It is a conversation about what becomes possible when you stop waiting to feel ready.

Dear Mango | You Just Don't Break, Do You? Every single time she writes, she is literally scared. And yet she keeps coming back. Through grief, self-judgment, and a decade-long block that began the night before her husband died suddenly. Sade has been slowly learning that what she thinks is true and what is actually true are very different things. And that distinction, she says, is good information to have.

Melissa brings her own story of sporadic journaling, abstract painting, and the surprising moment she wrote a poem she did not know she had in her. Three years of workshops, coaching, therapy, yoga, and meditation later, she is only beginning to make sense of how it all connects. And while 95% of us believe we are self-aware, only 10 to 15% actually are.

This episode is about that gap.

Self-awareness is not self-criticism. It is not performing healing or having it all figured out. It is the moment you look up and ask yourself what you actually need right now. It is a practice you can start or return to at any time.

In this episode of Dear Mango, Mona Khalil explores what self-awareness looks like when the external world is designed to exhaust your attention, how to tell the difference between self-awareness and self-criticism, why writing it down gives you back your power, and what the science of memory, attention, and mindfulness has to do with trusting yourself.

Resources:

Feelings Wheel

Elizabeth Loftus on How Memory Can Be Manipulated

Josh Johnson

Diary of a CEO with Dr.K, Harvard-trained Psychiatrist

Dr. Amishi Jha’s Cognitive Neuroscientist on Mindfulness Research

The Invisible Gorilla Experiment

Steve Bannon PBS Frontline Interview 2019

Reflection prompt: Write about a recent conversation you had.
