Ep70: Derek's Pikes Peak Hill Climb Evo X

Pikes Peak Hill Climb is the most prestigious race in the entire country. This year is the 101st anniversary of a race, not just against other cars but against a 14,115ft mountain with 156 turns over 12.42 miles. Derek and his team are adding to Mitsubishi’s over 200 car deep fight against the mountain in their purpose built Evo X. We start by talking about Derek’s history of racing the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. He then tells us about the setup on his Evo X that makes it not only fast but able to handle all of those turns and gigantic elevation change. Derek talks about his racing background and why he eventually decided to talk on the mountain from other forms of racing. Derek talks about his goals for this year, the race is actually this weekend (June 25th, 2023). He then goes on to talk about his long term goals in the race including setting new records. The 4g is no doubt the most unloved platform in our community despite it having very capable engines and a stout six speed manual transmission. Those who are fans of the platform, love them and know their capabilities and potential whereas those outside the platform community dismiss them. There are few shops making parts for the 4g and even fewer shops making parts for the 4g to be quicker. The shop at the forefront, paving the way for 4g performance is Speed Farm Garage. The man at the helm is James Aubin, who has owned multiple 4gs including his unbelievable mid-engine 4g build. He makes the only suspension bushings on the market for the platform and ones that perform better than the factory ones did. We talk about what it is about the platform that made him invest so heavily into it. We talk about his shop car that has a 3.8L 6G75 living where the back seats once were. We talk about the parts that James makes for the platform now and the ones that he plans to make in the future. We talk about James’ goals for the shop and his goals for his shop car. Tony has forgotten more about the 4G63 than most of us will ever know. From his 6 second dragster to his ultra reliable 8 second 2g DSM that flips the joke of "unreliable DSM" on it's ear. Tony and I talk about what it was that drew him to DSMs in the first place. We talk about his and his father's amazing 6 second 4G63 powered dragster. We discuss what made them build it in the first place and what the future hold for the car. Tony describes what it's like to cut a sub one second 60 foot. Tony and I talk about what all is involved in a drag and drive event including the behind the scenes of what you don't always see. We talk about Tony’s top 10 (on our 2g list) 2g setup and why he chose what he chose to not only propel him into the mid 8s but to do so while driving thousands of miles to and from each track. Tony gives his advice to anyone looking to get into drag and drive events. He and I discuss the future of his current car and the new direction it could potentially be heading. Tony outlines future events that he plans to compete at with both vehicles. He talks about a new project in his life that is far outside the norm of what he is used to. Lucian is to thank for a lot of fast Mitsubishis up in Canada including his own Evo X and Ralliart. He talks about what it is that got him into Mitsubishis in the first place and what it was that drew him to the Evo X. He shares his reasoning to keep the stock block intact and to push it to where he has. Jason tells the story that led to him owning his 2g and what grew his passion to not only build it but to chronicle it for the benefit of the community.
